Customer Complaints Season 3 EP 08

Another drop in the books, another pile of customer cars that tell stories nobody asked for. If you're tuned into the "Customer Complaints" series, you know we don't sugarcoat it: we read the notes, poke around, test drive the chaos, and call it like we see it. Episode 8 keeps the formula strong, clocking in around 25 minutes of straight shop therapy and mechanical roasting.

We kicked off with a 2007 Lexus IS-250 with 189k miles. The customer just bought it and it’s already a "certified" piece of work. The power steering is playing hide and seek, wires are dangling by the pedals like a tech’s worst nightmare, and the aftermarket front bumper has zero clips left. The "fix" of the day? Zip ties. Not just anywhere, but zip ties wrapped around the brake pad hardware because someone thought that would stop a squeak. Pro tip: If you buy a car with a front end that doesn’t line up, just walk away. It’s been in a wreck and fixed on the cheap.

Next was a 2009 Honda Accord with 180k miles hearing a grinding noise. We found axle grease painted all over the engine bay because the boot was completely blown. The previous "mechanic" was a special kind of something, placing hose clamps in the wrong spots and missing clips entirely. It’s a masterclass in how not to work on a car.

Then we rolled in a Nissan with a CVT and 88k miles. This one looks like it had a bad time with some speed bumps. The boots were torn and it was running a "Pro-Tone" oil filter. The kind of cheap part that tells you exactly how the previous owner felt about maintenance. While the transmission had actually been serviced recently, the body took a hit; someone used the wrong lift points to jack it up and crunched the side skirts.

The real tragedy of the day: a 2021 Kia Stinger GT with a scraping noise from the rear. We didn't even need to look long to find the culprit: a snapped differential bolt. These things are notorious for snapping during hard launches, and this one was "with Jesus now." The right wheel was jumping so hard it was stressing the only bushing left holding the diff in place. If you own one of these, get a diff brace before your drivetrain decides to exit the vehicle.

The "Are you kidding me?" moment: A car came in from San Diego because three other shops couldn't find a mysterious scratching noise heard on the freeway. We took the wheel off and found the high-tech culprit: a leaf and a seed. That’s it. A mystery that baffled other shops was just a bit of yard waste stuck in the brake area.

We wrapped up with a 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer featuring a "P0137" code, a leaking water pump, and low coolant. At least the customer left us some ice-cold Coronas in the trunk to wash down the salt of a long day in the shop.

Closing quote for the week: "Everybody’s damaged in life. That’s why I treat everybody with kindness... I know what it’s like to feel at the bottom of that bottle."

Full episode is up on the channel. Catch the shenanigans before the next one lands.
